About Us :: Poetry
I started this after-school Poetry Club because I feel so passionately about the importance of artistic expression, even with young children. Poetry Club was the merging of two of my favorite things: the written word, and the students at SBCS.

A Peaceful World
A peaceful world is where love, joy, and laughter combine
Peace is like a cloud of softness.
The earth floats and shines like the moonlight,
Like the stars so bright
Like all of the good things in life.
Kaylyn B., Grade 3
Fly
I wish I could fly likeThe birds in the sky
I wonder why
Since I can't fly
Babies cry
I don't know why
Since I can't fly
When kids are new
They're really shy
I don't know why
Since I can't fly.
Imani K., Grade 2
My Heart Beats Like a Storm
My Heart Beats like a storm
I believe in my dreams
That I have a true heart
Family and friends together
As two peas in a pod
I know my heart beats like a storm.
Keshawnia J., Grade 2
Grandpa
In my dream it's happy thinkingbecause I dream about Heaven
That can make your life easy,
and good people who were scared to die.
My Grandpa died when my mom was little.
I didn't meet him, but I do think about him
And about Heaven
He is safe there all of the time
He as a true grandpa to me
He is in my dreams and all of my family's dreams too.

Helping People
Some people in the city are just bad
Some people are good
But the ones that are bad are so bad
They always give drugs and I don't like that.
Some people in the city are just bad.
For me, I will care about the good people
And the poor people.
I am sad about the poor people.
They are homeless and they have to sleep on the street,
On the cold streets,
Nothing to cover them
On the cold streets.
Some bad people in the city treat them bad
And that's just sad
What I do is give them something.
Something that is nice.
Something that will help them
If I could give them just one thing,
It would be a house
To keep them warm on cold
City Nights.
Jamarhi D., Grade 3
Chicken!
CHICKEN, CHICKEN, CHICKEN that
Wanders off everywhere, everywhere, everywhere
That starts as an EGG, EGG, EGG
And hatches, hatches, hatches
Into a chicken, chicken, CHICKEN!
Later, Later, Later
He will Fly, Fly, Fly
He will get old, old, old
And have a grandson, grandson, grandson!
CJ L., Grade 3
Spheres
Spheres are circular.
Spheres are round.
A sphere is so wonderful that is spins around!
Spheres are so round so you will
get to the start,
You will get so confused
That you will need a fuse!
CJ L., Grade 3
Why is This
Why are Barbie dolls always in a position? Why can't little boys listen?
Why are we in war?
Why can't there be peaceful, open doors?
Why are people so mean?
Why can't we all just dream?
Maybe it just has to be this way,
But I can't help but wonder ...
Why?
Kia D., Grade 3
Life Feel
Life is life.
Life means you can breathe and you can feel.
Let your feelings show.
Do not be afraid.
Show how you feel while you still have life.
Believe.
You can.
Here are words to remember: Power Love and Truth
All are equal.
Feel life and talent.
Don't be afraid. Say it loud.
Life is life. I am not afraid.
Kia D., Grade 3
Happy
Happy is a feeling that never leaves you
It stays right beside you
Happy is a feeling that you should love forever and ever.
Imani K., Grade 2
Faith
You blossom and bloom into the person you areWondering if faith will come to you
You are frightened with nobody there
Please don't cry, a voice says, for everything will is going to be alright.
Then I see the light
Someone is coming out
It's Jesus in the light
His hands fall upon me.
Then, without fear, I step back into the darkness.
I am no longer scared.
I have faith with me.
Kaylyn B., Grade 3
Heaven
I think about Heaven.
There is light, clouds,
and God.
When I die, God will show me heaven,
and all things that are beautiful:
flowers, pets, church, peace, roses and colors
