Academics :: Choice Theory

One of the goals of SBCS is to fully implement choice theory into the classrooms. Choice Theory is a relatively new form of psychology developed by pschiatrist William Glasser that explains that we have a purpose for all of our behaviors, whether they are responsible or not. These behaviors are driven by our desire to meet our own personal needs. According to Glasser, there are 5 basic needs that all people possess:

  • Survival
  • Love and Belonging
  • Fun
  • Freedom
  • Power

These needs are the foundation for our "quality worlds," or the what we want the most in the world. By having a staff at SBCS that understands the importances of meeting basic needs, we strive to make school part of every student's quality world.

Choice Theory also shies away from external control and coercion because it does not bring relationships closer. Hitting, yelling, and force will not improve your relationship with somebody; it will only damage it and will cause the other person to remove you from their quality world. At SBCS, we value our relationships with our students, so you will not see the staff screaming at the students or unfair punishments that you will find at some other schools. A bulk of the information comes from Choice Theory creator William Glasser as well as friends of SBCS; Choice Theory experts Bob Sullo and Jon Erwin. Without Bob and Jon, our school would not be as great as it is today!
